I&#039;m not a fan of spanning for tags.  I think that the Flickr balance is the best since it allows for the raw tags to be kept for later processing, and the clean tags to be used for display and aggregation purposes.

Spanning seems like something that should be done in the indexing steps of your algorithm - not the storage step.
